If you have tried to install Virtual Server 2005 in your laptop running Windows 7, you have seen that it seem impossible… Wel, you need to follow these steps if you want to get it running in your machine without problems, but it is very important to execute the steps in order:
- Go to Start –> Run, and type gpedit.msc. Local Group Policy Editor will be opened.
- On Local Computer Policy tree, select Computer Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Windows Components –> Application Compatibility. All items listed appeared as “Not Configured”. Right click on each one and select Edit. Select Enabled and click OK.
- On Local Computer Policy tree, select Computer Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> System –> Troubleshooting and Diagnostics –> Application Compatibility Diagnostics. All items listed appeared as “Not Configured”. Right click on each one and select Edit. Select Enabled and click OK.
- Reboot the machine
- Execute Virtual Server 2005 Setup file
- When the installation is finished, navigate to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Virtual Server\ path
- Search vssrvc.exe file and rename it to vssrvc-win7.exe
- Go to Start –> Run, type Regedit and click OK. Registry Editor will be loaded.
- Select Edit –> Find. Search all the Registry entries that contains the value “vssrvc.exe” and change it by “vssrvc-win7.exe”
- Reboot the machine
- Repeat Step #1 and #2, but now select “Not Configured” and click OK for each item
- Repeat Step #3, but now select “Not Configured” and click OK for each item
- Reboot the machine
- Now you can run Virtual Server 2005 in your Windows 7 machine without problems
Just one more thing, you have to add the URL http://localhost/VirtualServer/VSWebApp.exe?view=1 to the Compativility View Settings section in your Internet Explorer 8 to get the web interface running. So, from Internet Explorer, select Tools –> Compatibility View Settings, type the url on the Add this website field and click Add, and click Close.
